Joyau cachéClaviere is a small, traditional mountain village in Italy, set at 1,760m right on the border with France. It’s one of the country's oldest ski resorts, where skiing’s been part of the culture since the 1920s, and it’s kept the feel of a real working village. The setting is lovely in itself, a single main street of stone houses and family-run hotels beneath Monte Chaberton, but it's the position that really sets Claviere apart. It sits at the very foot of the Montgenèvre pass, with France just above the village, so it has a dual character: an easygoing Italian base, with all the food, warmth, and hospitality that brings, and the French village of Montgenèvre right on its doorstep. Sitting high and shaded, Claviere also holds its snow well, with a season that usually runs from early December into April.
On its own, Claviere is a friendly, unintimidating mountain that suits beginners and intermediates best. Beginners start on the nursery slopes in the village centre and move onto gentle, tree-lined blue runs back to the base, while the long, wide red cruisers rolling down through the larch forest are the backbone of the skiing for intermediates. Strong skiers have a few short and steep black pitches in the trees and off-piste lines to seek out. From the village you can also ski straight across the border into Montgenèvre (no passport needed), and in the other direction the lifts open onto the wider Milky Way, one of the largest linked ski areas in Europe. Here, around 400km of pistes connect Claviere with Sestriere, Sauze d'Oulx, Sansicario, Cesana, and Montgenèvre. Plenty of people are happy on the local slopes and a hop into France; others give over a day or two to range further across the domain.
Off the slopes, Claviere stays charming and easygoing. There's plenty to do beyond downhill skiing, with cross-country trails looping out from the village, a snow park for freestylers, and snowmobile trips up the mountain. A few hotels offer small spas to unwind in after a day on the pistes. Evenings tend to be relaxed, focused on Piedmontese mountain cooking and drinks in one of the village bars. It all makes for a calm, characterful base where you can enjoy a proper Italian village with one of Europe's biggest ski areas on the doorstep.
