Station de ski de Cardrona - Queenstown

Cardrona Alpine Resort is a wide, sun-filled mountain high in the Southern Alps of New Zealand's South Island, with long views over lake country and snow-capped peaks in every direction. It's best known for its freestyle pedigree, having hosted World Cup events and trained a string of Olympic skiers and snowboarders, but its appeal runs far wider than terrain parks. This is a mountain that suits a family on their first ski holiday just as well as a rider chasing podium-standard jumps, with plenty in between for everyone else. The feel of the place is relaxed and friendly, with a culture that's serious about skiing and easy-going about everything else, which is about as Kiwi as it gets.

Following the 2025 opening of its Soho Basin, Cardrona is now New Zealand's largest ski resort, with more than 600 hectares of terrain spread across several broad, open basins. Climbing from a base at 1,260m to a summit of 1,860m, the mountain sits above the treeline, so instead of trails cut through forest you get sweeping snowfields and wide, rolling pistes, divided by an occasional steep ridge and chute. Difficulty is spread fairly evenly across all levels, with gentle, confidence-building runs for beginners, long cruisers for intermediates, and a good share of advanced and expert terrain. Beyond the 30-plus marked runs there's extensive off-piste to explore. The season runs from mid-June to early October (squarely in the Southern Hemisphere winter), and an average of around 2.9m of natural snow a year, topped up by snowmaking on the main basins, keeps the key runs in good shape throughout.

Most people visiting Cardrona base themselves in one of two lakeside towns and head up the mountain road each morning, though there's also a small cluster of self-catering apartments at the base if you'd rather stay slopeside. Wānaka is relaxed and lakeside, with a strong food and craft-beer scene. Queenstown, over the Crown Range, is the South Island's adventure hub. Beyond skiing, the area is one of New Zealand's great outdoor playgrounds: you can take a scenic lake cruise, soak in hot pools, sample the local wineries, or get your adrenaline going with bungee jumping, jet boating, and skydiving. Skiing high on the mountain by day and dropping back to the lakes by night gives the whole trip an easy rhythm, with two of the country's finest towns to enjoy in the evenings.
