Balderschwang is Germany's highest village, sitting at 1,044m in a quiet valley of the Allgäu Alps right on the Austrian border. Rolling pastures and dark spruce forest wrap around a cluster of timber-fronted hotels and farmhouses, giving the village a settled, deeply Bavarian feel. A dedicated beginner area near the village has gentle, sunlit slopes with practice lifts, and the longest descent runs 4.6km from summit to valley, a satisfying ride through changing terrain. 2km of floodlit slopes open up night skiing on selected evenings, and a terrain park with kickers, rails, and a halfpipe gives freestylers a space to play.

Hotels here lean traditional and family-run, with wood-panelled dining rooms and dairy-fresh Allgäu cheese on every menu. Off the slopes, the Hörnerdörfer Nordic network draws cross-country skiers with over 70km of groomed trails, and winter walking, snowshoeing, and toboggan runs thread out from the village in every direction. Overall, Balderschwang's atmosphere is warm, welcoming, and rooted in its community, which takes pride in its Bavarian traditions.
