Joyau cachéCannon Mountain is one of the oldest ski areas in North America, and it wears that history openly. Skiers were cutting trails through its forest in the early 1930s, and in 1938 the mountain opened North America's first aerial passenger tramway, a feat that helped establish the White Mountains of New Hampshire, in the United States, as a skiing destination. That pioneering spirit still runs through the place. Cannon is an unpretentious mountain with a loyal following, where the appeal is the skiing itself along with the mountain's own unvarnished character.
The skiing has a classic New England feel, with trails cut narrow and natural through the trees, following the contours of the granite dome rather than graded flat. It has 98 runs spread across 285 acres, and a north-facing aspect helps keep snow in good condition well into the season. There's terrain for every level, though it favours intermediates and stronger skiers. Beginners have a contained learning area with its own lifts, plus a few gentle runs lower down to build on. Intermediates get the most to go at, with long, winding cruisers that drop from the summit through the forest. Cannon really suits advanced skiers, with 664m of vertical feeding steep trails, tree-lined glades, and mogul runs, including DJ's Tramline, often called the steepest trail in the East.
Cannon sits in a steep-sided glacial valley that's one of New England's most beautiful natural settings, with hiking trails, frozen waterfalls, and a snow-covered stillness through the winter season. From its summit at 1,244m, views reach out across the surrounding peaks and the valley below. Nearby towns give you a comfortable, good-value base, with restaurants, pubs, and family-friendly places to stay. The season usually runs from late November to mid-April, with natural snowfall topped up by snowmaking across most of the network. Whether it's the history, the terrain, or the pull of proper New England mountain skiing that draws you, Cannon rewards the trip.
