Vues spectaculairesEldora Mountain is Boulder's home ski hill, a friendly, refreshingly low-key mountain of the sort that's become rare across the United States. Set in forested mountains on the edge of a protected wilderness, it's where Boulder locals have learned to ski and spent their snow days since 1962, and it has an easygoing, all-are-welcome feel. It's small enough to know your way around quickly, and it has a devoted local following that treats the mountain as their own. Eldora is also one of the few ski areas you can reach by public bus, with a seasonal service running right up to the foot of the lifts, calling at Nederland on the way.
The mountain divides into two distinct characters. On the front you'll find the gentle half, with a spread of wide, well-groomed cruisers that suit beginners and intermediates finding their rhythm. Over the back, the terrain around Corona Bowl is where things get interesting for strong skiers, with steep, mostly ungroomed pitches, tree-lined glades, and open bowls that hold their snow well. All told it covers around 275 hectares (680 acres), with over 400 metres of vertical, compact enough to get to know quickly but varied enough to keep you busy. Sitting high and just east of the Divide, Eldora stays reliably cold, and while it can catch the wind up top, it has the most complete snowmaking in Colorado to back up what falls. That combination keeps the season long and dependable, usually running from mid-November well into April.
Part of Eldora's appeal is the world around it. Staying here puts you among characterful mountain towns, with a proper city not far away. Most visitors base themselves in Nederland or Rollinsville, both a short drive from the slopes, and from Nederland you can catch the ski bus up. Nederland is quirky and artsy, with craft breweries, cosy cafes, and live-music bars; Rollinsville, just down the valley, is a tiny mountain hamlet with an old-Colorado feel. There's plenty to do beyond the downhill runs, too, from cross-country and snowshoe trails at Eldora's own Nordic centre to backcountry touring across the surrounding wilderness. And when you fancy a bigger day out, Boulder is around 40 minutes away, with a proper buzzing city centre right at the foot of the mountains.
