Bulgaria has three main ski resorts, each with a different feel. All three are significantly cheaper than the Alps, and the hospitality is genuinely warm. Here’s how they compare.

Pamporovo is the most family-friendly of Bulgaria’s resorts – it’s compact, gentle, and purpose-built for skiing, with nursery slopes close to the accommodation. Bansko also works well for families, especially those with older children who want more terrain to explore. Lesson prices across both resorts are a fraction of what you’d pay in France or Austria.
Bulgaria is one of the cheapest places in Europe to learn to ski. Pamporovo has the gentlest terrain and is the most popular choice for first-timers. Borovets also has good beginner areas close to the village. Lessons and equipment hire cost significantly less than in the Alps, which makes Bulgaria a smart pick for anyone testing the waters.
This is Bulgaria’s strongest suit. Lift passes, food, drink, and accommodation are all noticeably cheaper than Western European resorts. Borovets tends to be the cheapest option overall, with a good range of budget hotels and self-catering apartments. Bansko offers slightly more variety in dining and nightlife, but prices are still a world away from the Alps.
Bansko is the standout for groups – it has the most developed après scene in Bulgaria, centred around the cobbled old town with its mehanas (traditional taverns), bars, and restaurants. Borovets has a smaller but lively nightlife scene too, popular with younger groups looking for a good time on a budget.
Bulgaria’s resorts are smaller than the big Alpine areas, but they offer solid skiing at a fraction of the price. Bansko has the most terrain and reliable snow. For beginners and intermediates especially, Bulgaria is a great option.
Fly into Sofia or Plovdiv. Bansko is around two to three hours by road from Sofia, Borovets around an hour, and Pamporovo roughly two and a half hours from Plovdiv. WeSki packages include transfers, so the journey is sorted.
