Activités hors-pisteAttitash Mountain Resort sits in New Hampshire's Mount Washington Valley, one of New England's best-known ski regions in the United States. Skiing here goes back a long way: a trail was first cut on the mountain in 1938, and the resort opened in 1965. It spreads across two connected peaks, each with its own feel. Attitash, the original mountain, keeps the classic New England style of narrow, winding, tree-lined runs, while Bear Peak, added in the 1990s, is more open and modern, with wide cruisers and gladed terrain. With the village of Bartlett at the base and the town of North Conway about ten minutes away, it's a relaxed, unpretentious mountain and a real local favourite.
Attitash spreads its 311 acres fairly evenly across the ability range, so there's terrain to suit most skiers. The Attitash side holds the steeper, more characterful runs, narrow, traditional New England trails dropping down the front face, including the all-natural signature run Hunky Dory. Over on Bear Peak, the trails open out into wide, well-groomed cruisers and tree-lined glades, with a race trail among the highlights. Long top-to-bottom descents are part of the appeal: the vertical drop reaches 1,750 feet (around 530m) from a summit of about 716m, and the longest trail runs a little over 2km. The season usually runs from late November through to mid-April, helped by heavy snowmaking across both peaks.
Off the slopes, the Mount Washington Valley is a big part of the appeal. North Conway is full of outlet shopping, independent restaurants, and craft breweries, while the surrounding White Mountain National Forest sets the scene with frozen waterfalls, snow-covered peaks, and some of the most scenic winter driving in the Northeast. There's plenty to fill the non-skiing hours, from a relaxed afternoon browsing the shops to snowshoeing, snowmobiling, or a dog-sledding run out in the White Mountains.
