Ski freerideCopper Mountain sits high in the Tenmile Range of Colorado's Summit County, about an hour and a half west of Denver in the western United States. It's a proper skier's mountain with a relaxed, welcoming feel. Three compact, pedestrian villages sit right at the foot of the slopes, so most accommodation is ski-in, ski-out. Copper has been going since 1972 and serves as an official training base for the US Ski and Snowboard Team, which says a lot about the quality and variety of the terrain, and the snow that arrives early and lasts well into spring.
The skiing at Copper Mountain spreads over around 1,000 hectares (around 2,500 acres), across a wide front face and a set of high bowls, with terrain for every level. There are gentle, rolling greens to learn and cruise on, long blue runs winding through the trees, and steep bowls, chutes, and glades up top for strong skiers. Freestyle is a real strength on this mountain, with the Woodward Mountain Parks running from your first boxes and jumps right up to big kickers and a superpipe. Sitting high in the Rockies, Copper picks up around 7.5 metres of snow a season, topped up by snowmaking, and the season runs long, from early November into late April, often opening among the first resorts in Colorado.
There's much more to a holiday at Copper Mountain than the skiing. West Lake, right in the middle of Center Village, freezes over for skating and makes a natural gathering point, and the mountain coaster and tubing lanes are good fun off the slopes. You can also head out on snowshoes or cross-country skis, or take a sleigh ride into the woods, and if the weather turns, the indoor Woodward barn is a huge shed of trampolines, foam pits, and ramps where you can learn a few tricks. In the evening, the villages keep things simple, with a few sit-down restaurants, pizza places, and barbecue smokehouses depending on your mood, plus a handful of taverns and après bars for a night out. Copper is a ski resort more than a town, so for a wider choice, the lively little town of Frisco is about ten minutes down the road.
