Excellente ambiance après-skiBoyne Mountain sits in northern Michigan, in the Great Lakes region of the United States. It's one of the Midwest's original ski resorts, founded in 1947 by Everett Kircher, a former car dealer and early pioneer of ski-resort snowmaking. Boyne is built for easygoing days enjoying the snow and mountain setting: picture rolling hills of snow-covered forest and frozen lakes, with a laid-back, friendly feel to go with it. At its base sits a small Bavarian-style village, where much of the lodging is ski-in, ski-out, so you can often step out of the door and straight onto the snow.
The skiing at Boyne Mountain spreads across around 60 trails, and most of them cut through northern Michigan hardwood forest. Beginners have a gentle, well-defined learning area to ease into, intermediates get plenty of the mountain in long, groomed blue cruisers that roll through the trees, and strong skiers have steep black pitches on the main face, plus a scattering of wooded glades to drop into. Boyne’s grooming is meticulous, a carry-over from the resort's early snowmaking days, and it shows in the day-to-day condition of the pistes. Boyne sits in the Lake Michigan snow belt, so natural snowfall through the winter is backed up by snowmaking across most of the mountain, carrying the season from late November into spring. Night skiing is part of the draw too, with most of the trails lit well into the evening.
Boyne's base village is built in a Bavarian style, with shops, restaurants and an outdoor ice rink at its centre. At its heart, the Mountain Grand Lodge and Spa houses Michigan's largest spa and the biggest indoor waterpark in the state. Off the slopes there's plenty to fill the time, from tubing, ziplining and snowshoeing to an evening walk across SkyBridge Michigan, a long suspension bridge with wide views over the hills. Dining runs from slope-side grills and food trucks to smart sit-down restaurants, and après settles into the taverns, pubs and bars. The lakeside towns of Boyne City and Petoskey add a little northern Michigan small-town character if you want a look beyond the resort.
