Ski freerideCrested Butte sits deep in the Elk Mountains of Colorado, in the western United States, far enough off the main routes to feel like a world of its own. The town began as a coal-mining settlement in the 1880s, and its past is still written along Elk Avenue, where preserved Victorian storefronts now house independent shops, bars, and restaurants. It's a working town with a life of its own beyond the slopes, and much of its easy, unhurried feel comes from the locally owned businesses, a close mountain community, and a setting ringed by high peaks and national forest. People come for the mountain character as much as the skiing, and for some of the steepest lift-accessed terrain in North America.
The mountain rises to a summit of 3,707m, with a vertical of over 850m and around 625 hectares of skiing spread across it. Crested Butte made its name on steep, extreme terrain, and that remains its signature. Areas like the North Face and the Extreme Limits hold seriously demanding inbounds runs, with chutes and open faces that draw expert skiers from far afield. There's much more to it than the steeps, though. Crested Butte’s front side has broad, well-groomed cruisers for intermediates to find their rhythm, and a dedicated beginner area at the base gives newer skiers a gentle place to start. Sitting this high in the Rockies, the mountain keeps its snow cold and dry, with around 6m falling across a season that runs from late November into early April.
Off the slopes, the historic town of Crested Butte lies about three kilometres down the valley from the ski base, and it rewards the short hop. Elk Avenue is the heart of it, a run of Victorian buildings given over to independent restaurants, craft breweries, and galleries, and a National Historic District designation keeps that character intact. You might spend an evening moving between its bars and dinner tables, take a horse-drawn sleigh ride out into the snow, or simply enjoy the slow pace of a mountain-town evening. Crested Butte gives you as much to enjoy after skiing as during it.
